Alexandria, Virginia – On Monday, June 19, 2017, SENTEL’s Corporate Headquarters received its ISO 9001:2015 certification! The ISO 9001:2015 certificate, valid for 3 years, certifies that SENTEL’s Quality Management System (QMS) adheres to the International Organization for Standardization’s fifth ISO standard and formally certifies that SENTEL demonstrates compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001. SENTEL has been registered to the previous edition of the ISO standard, ISO 9001:2008, since 2011.

What is ISO?

ISO refers to the International Organization for Standardization.

  • ISO involves proactive quality assurance, rather than reactive quality control.
  • ISO emphasizes how we avoid problems, rather than how we resolve problems (which saves time and money).
  • ISO requires the documentation of approved processes to ensure repeatability.

The ISO 9001:2015 standard, is a robust standard with requirements in leadership, risk-based thinking, documented information, and process approach. SENTEL Corporate Headquarters process owners underwent a readiness review in December 2016, and a second two day audit on May 17-18, 2017 with two separate auditors from the British Standards Institution (BSI) who verified SENTEL’s compliance with the new ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

“In today’s competitive environment, SENTEL’s commitment to quality is a key discriminator that will ensure quality results are delivered to our customers each and every time. Our commitment to achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification, a year before the transition deadline, is testimony to our hard work and dedication,” stated Kip Ward, SENTEL’s President & COO.

The SENTEL team delivers professional engineering, information technology, business services, mission support and logistical skill sets to meet the enterprise needs of government and commercial clients. In providing the solution, SENTEL partners with our customers to deliver people and know-how.

SENTEL Corporation, Information Technology Solutions Sector today announced that it has been appraised at Maturity Level 3 of the CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Integration (CMMI)®-DEV V1.3. Concurrently, Software Engineering was appraised at Maturity Level 2, having sustained this level for 17 years. The appraisal was performed by Global Process Solutions, LLC.

The photo, above, depicts the CMMI Appraisal Team (appearing left to right): Paul Schwartz, Mary Segnit (Lead Appraiser), Amy LaCivita (CMMI Sponsor), Lynn Simms (EPG Chair), Jackie Harding, Michelle Simms, Rosario Garcia, Doug Mahagan, and General Kip Ward.

CMMI is a collection of best practices for product and process capability improvement that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes that ultimately improve their performance.

An appraisal at Maturity Level 3 indicates the organization is performing at a “defined” level. At this level, processes are well characterized and understood, and are described in standards, procedures, tools, and methods. The organization’s set of standard processes, which is the basis for Maturity Level 3, is established and improved over time.

An appraisal at Maturity Level 2 indicates the organization is performing at a “managed” level. At this level, projects have ensured that processes are planned and executed in accordance with policy; the projects employ skilled people who have adequate resources to produce controlled outputs; involve relevant stakeholders; are monitored, controlled, and reviewed; and are evaluated for adherence to their process descriptions.

The systems and software development work at SENTEL Corporation has been performing at appraised levels of the CMM and CMMI since the year 2000. This latest effort by the Information Technology Solutions group in conjunction with our expanded organization’s set of standard processes, is the pinnacle of our best practices for over 17 process areas. According to Lynn Simms, Engineering Process Group (EPG) Chair, “We are thrilled to be formally recognized for our consistent dedication to quality products and processes.”

SENTEL’s IT Solutions has been working with the Audit Programs and Support Services (APSS) at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) since 2001. We have consistently seen improvements in deliverable quality as SENTEL continued to follow the best practices and organizational standard processes as described by the CMMI model. According to Rahul Vyas, APSS Program Manager, “Our recent appraisal to CMMI Level 3 will allow us to continue delivering timely and of exceptional quality deliverables. With the inclusion of 11 more process areas, we are looking forward to large gains in customer satisfaction, increased efficiency and deliverable quality.”
